Vienna short-term rental registration (WKVRG)
Updated: September 2026
On 19 September 2026 the City of Vienna announced a planned Wiener Kurzzeitvermietungsregistergesetz (WKVRG) for platform short-term rentals. The law still needs Wiener Landtag passage (targeted November 2026) and the final text may change. Glint Host Registry helps you prepare. We do not submit government forms or issue registration numbers.
What was announced
An electronic Vienna register for platform STR (Airbnb, Booking.com and similar). Natural and legal persons must register each unit. The city may refuse listings where local rules prohibit STR. WKVRG is announced policy, not yet adopted law.
Timelines (as announced)
Planned entry into force 1 January 2027 for new hosts. Existing listings: transition until end of Q1 2027 (31 March 2027). Registration numbers must appear on platform listings once the register is live.
Platforms and fines
Platforms will need a valid registration number to keep listings live after the transition. Austrian press (for example ORF and derStandard, September 2026, citing the mayor) reported proposed fines up to €50,000 per breach; this is not stated on the official announcement (https://www.wien.gv.at/kontakt/wohnungen-kurzzeitvermietung-registrierungspflicht). No guest-police submission is part of this Vienna register.
EU Regulation 2024/1028
In force since 20 May 2026, the EU regulation requires platforms to verify registration numbers where Member States require them. Vienna's register is the local implementation path announced by the city. At federal level, BMWET states that as of 20 May 2026 no Austrian Bundesland has implemented the EU STR registration procedure yet, so there is no nationwide registration number requirement outside Vienna's planned register: https://www.bmwet.gv.at/en/Topics/tourism/tourism-service-and-contacts/str_regulation.html
90-day rule, Ortstaxe and Ausnahmebewilligung (separate from WKVRG)
Today: you may share your home for tourist stays up to 90 days per year without Ausnahmebewilligung, register for Ortstaxe and tourism statistics (VIETour), and apply for Ausnahmebewilligung if you exceed 90 days. The announced WKVRG registration number from 2027 is an additional platform transparency requirement. It is not the Ortstaxe account and the register portal is not live yet. See Stadt Wien guidance on private tourist rental, Ausnahmebewilligung and Ortstaxe.
